IMPORTANT - Changes in Student Visa Procedures from 26 April 2008

  1. Changes to Student Permission to Work:

From 26 April 2008, all student visas will be granted with work rights attached . This will remove the need for most international students to make separate applications for student visas with permission to work after arrival in Australia.

While student visa holders will have work rights automatically included in their visa grant, the work conditions themselves will not change . Students and their dependants will still have the same work rights as before and will be restricted from undertaking work until they have commenced their course in Australia.

    - Primary applicants will be granted a student visa which will automatically be subject to new condition 8105 . This condition will allow the holder to work up to 20 hours per week while their course is in session, excluding any work undertaken as a registered part of their course. This condition will also restrict the holder from undertaking any work until the holder has commenced their course in Australia.

    - Secondary applicants will be granted a student visa which will automatically be subject to new condition 8104 . This condition will allow the holder to work up to 20 hours per week and will restrict the holder from undertaking any work until the primary visa holder has commenced their course of study in Australia.

This condition will also specify that dependants of students who have commenced a Masters or PhD level course are able to work unlimited hours. Conditions 8105 and 8104 will also include the definition of a 'week' in relation to work limitations as being a period commencing on a Monday and ending on a Sunday.
  2. Increase in the Student Visa Application Charge:

To accommodate the new permission to work arrangements, the Student Visa Application Charge (VAC) will increase by AUD$20 to AUD$450 from 26 April 2008.This will result in an overall saving of $40 for student visa holders who were previously required to pay $430 on initial application and a further $60 in Australia for permission to work. The new VAC in Bangladesh Taka will be BDT 29,820.

The new VAC will apply to all student visa applications, including subclass 580 (student guardian), lodged on or after 26 April 2008.

    Transitional arrangements

Persons granted students visas subject to 8101 prior to 26 April 2008 will continue to be able to lodge an application for permission to work online or by paper using form 157P - Application for a student visa with permission to work. The application charge for permission to work will remain at AUD $60.
  3. Changes to Tourist (e676) and student eVisa Forms:

From 26 April 2008, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship will implement changes to the e676 and Student eVisa forms (both the online and offline eforms). The eVisa forms available on the Internet will be changed to contain additional questions on Health and Character. To avoid any unnecessary delays in processing, applicants are encouraged to complete all of the additional information prior to lodging your application online.

VISA APPLICATION CHARGES 1 JULY 2008 - 31 DECEMBER 2008
Payable at the VFS Australian Visa Application Centre by Standard Chartered Bank draft or BRAC Bank draft (purchased from BRAC Bank extension counter at VFS) Citizenship charges are payable by Standard Chartered Bank draft at VFS or High Commission.

Application Forms are now “Fillable” Online

Most of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship's forms are now in Portable Document Format (PDF), which are "fillable" on its website atwww.immi.gov.au/allforms . The new forms are identical in appearance to the previous downloadable forms but the difference is that clients can now complete these forms on their own computer and then print, sign and lodge their applications.

It needs to be noted, however, that these forms cannot yet be lodged electronically. Although clients can download and save copies of the basic PDF forms to their own computers, they will not be able to save any of the information they have entered into these forms unless they have a full version of Adobe Acrobat Professional (not the free Adobe Reader) installed on their computer.

When a client opens any of the fillable forms using the free Adobe Reader, they will be presented with the following alert message: "Please Note: You cannot save a completed copy of this form on your computer. If you would like a copy for your records, please fill in and print it."

If the client has a full version of Adobe Acrobat Professional installed on their computer, the alert message will not appear.

The benefits to clients of using fillable forms include (i) helping to reduce processing times because DIAC officers will no longer struggle to read illegible handwriting; and (ii) ensuring only the latest versions of application forms are used.
