 Who should apply?

This visa allows people to visit Australia for a holiday or recreation, or to visit family and friends. This visa may also be used for other short-term non-work purposes including study for less than three months.
Please note that persons wishing to attend conferences related to their work or area of specialisation should apply for a Business (Short Stay) visa, subclass 456, even if they also intend to visit Australia for the purposes of tourism.

Who is this visa for?

This visa is available to all passport holders who are:
outside Australia and want to apply for a visa to visit Australia
in Australia and want to extend your stay as a visitor.

Certain tourists are also eligible to apply for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) or an eVisitor.

Repeat visits and long stays

This visa is designed only to allow temporary travel to Australia for tourism purposes or to visit family and friends. It cannot be used for long-term stays or residence. To be eligible for a further Tourist visa in the future, you must maintain extended periods of time outside of Australia.

If you would like to migrate or spend longer periods in Australia, you should explore more appropriate visa options which may be more suitable.

What does this visa let me do?

If granted, this visa will allow you either a single or multiple entry to Australia for a stay period of up to three, six or 12 months.

The period of stay and number of entries granted will depend on the purpose of the visit and your personal circumstances.

VISA APPLICATION
PROCESS


Step 1
Select a visa subclass which is appropriate for the purpose of your travel to Australia and download the relevant visa application form.

Please note:  You can also obtain a visa application form at the Australian Visa Application Centre (AVAC).

Step 2
Your visa application may require supporting documentation For a list of supporting documentation required for your visa; see the checklist under the relevant visa category. Gather together required supporting documentation for your application.

To avoid possible delays, you should include all relevant information and additional documentation in support of your application at the time of lodgment (see the checklist under the relevant visa category)

Step 3
Walk in to AVAC to lodge your application and submit your biometrics.


Step 4
Lodge your visa application and submit your biometric data at an AVAC. The Australian Visa Office may contact you to request additional information.


Step 5
Important note for visa applicants:

To make a valid application, applicants must lodge a complete and signed application form for the appropriate visa class, pay the appropriate visa application charge and provide their biometrics. Application forms for persons aged under 18 years must be signed by a parent or legal guardian.

All supporting documents and information should be submitted together with the application. Any documents that are not in English must be accompanied by a certified translation.

To avoid possible delays, you should include all relevant information and additional documentation in support of your application at the time of lodgment (documents required see the checklist available under the relevant visa category).

If you do not provide all the specified documentation at the time you lodge your application a decision may be made on the basis of the available information. Australian migration legislation permits a decision to be taken at any time after the application has been lodged.

You may be charged a courier cost for any additional documents which you subsequently submit to the Australian Visa Apllication Centre.
